Roman Space Telescope, With 100 Times Hubble’s View, to Launch August 30

The space telescope named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, Nancy Grace Roman, will launch at 7:26 a.m. Eastern time on August 30 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch is eight months ahead of its original schedule.
The Roman telescope’s field of view is 100 times wider than Hubble’s, allowing it to photograph large areas of the sky in a short time. Once in space, it will join the James Webb Space Telescope at the Sun-Earth Lagrange point L2.
Roman’s primary goal is to study dark energy and dark matter. It is expected to photograph about a billion galaxies and, using microlensing techniques, to discover more than 1,000 exoplanets. Its primary mission will last five years, with a possible five-year extension.
