La Liga 2026-27 Season Begins, Real Madrid/Barcelona Openers Delayed

The new La Liga 2026-27 season officially began on Saturday, August 15, with Deportivo Alavés hosting Getafe at their home ground, Mendizorroza. Alavés defeated a Getafe side down to ten men, winning 3-0. On the same day, Sevilla came from behind to beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1 with a stoppage-time penalty.
This season’s opening round of fixtures will be spread out, not played consecutively, until August 27. This is because clubs with players who reached the World Cup semifinals have been granted fixture postponements. As a result, the season openers for Real Madrid and Real Sociedad, and for Barcelona and Atlético, have been moved from their original schedule to between August 25 and 27.
The date for this season’s marquee El Clásico match (Barcelona vs Real Madrid) has already been announced as August 25.
