2026 Region and State Under-25 Basketball Tournament Opens in Taunggyi

The opening ceremony of the 2026 Region and State Under-25 Basketball (Men’s/Women’s) Tournament was held at 9 a.m. on August 3 at the State Training Sports Hall in Taunggyi, Shan State.
At the opening ceremony, athletes took their positions on the court before the program began. Ethnic Affairs Minister for Bamar Affairs Daw Khin Htwe Aung then delivered greeting remarks on behalf of the Shan State Chief Minister, and Myanmar Olympic Committee Deputy Chairman and Deputy Minister for Sports Affairs U Nyi Nyi gave opening remarks and formally opened the tournament.
In her remarks on behalf of the Chief Minister, Ethnic Affairs Minister Daw Khin Htwe Aung said, “Shan State is proud and pleased to host this year’s tournament. Accommodation and catering for the participating teams have been carefully arranged, and Shan State warmly welcomes everyone.”
She also urged athletes to compete with full sportsmanship and fair play, to respect the tournament’s rules, to strive to produce national-caliber players through the competition, and to compete with the aim of raising the standing of Myanmar basketball internationally.
Athletes then recited the four sporting pledges, and Deputy Minister U Nyi Nyi and Shan State Government ministers greeted the athletes and presented awards to the brass band. The athletes then left the court and the opening ceremony concluded.
Teams from various regions and states are competing in the tournament, with 15 men’s teams and 10 women’s teams taking part. The tournament runs from August 3 to 9, with the round-robin, quarterfinal, semifinal and final matches to follow as scheduled.
The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister for Sports Affairs U Nyi Nyi and officials, Shan State Government ministers and officials, officials from the Sports and Physical Education Department, representatives of the Myanmar Basketball Federation, specially invited guests, and coaches and athletes from the competing teams.
